Each doll is new and unique because whilst I may use a basic pattern, each doll is customised to be just that little bit different! A starting point is thinking about the type of doll, so for example will they be a witch or an angel or a cat or a hare? Then I choose the fabric for their clothes and build up a colour scheme for colour of hair, shoes etc. whilst starting to think about what accessories they may need. It takes time and is a labour of love!
These are the steps in my latest doll’s creation!
First I tea stain the cotton, which gives the dolls a slightly vintage look. For my Goth or vampire dolls I tend to keep the staining very light to keep them pale and interesting! Next I cut out and hand sew the pattern pieces and then use toy filling to stuff the doll. Next I hand paint the shoes, stripy legs and then paint and embroider the face. At this point I assemble the doll, and add the hair, thinking about the best style for the character of the doll. A fun part is making the clothes which are all hand sewn and then finally I add the accessories. Meet Arabella who was born in Glastonbury on the 1st of July!
